The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food performs tasks in the following areas: 

AGRICULTURE

In the field of agriculture the Ministry shall implement the Direct Payment Policy of the first pillar of the EU Common Agricultural Policy and manage the policy of agricultural markets. With limited competence it shall participate in the market-price and protective policy of agricultural, forestry and food products.

The Ministry shall also provide for implementation of agri-environmental measures or the ways of farming (organic and integrated farming), which are nature and people friendlier, and for sustaining the agriculture in areas with more unfavorable farming conditions.

RURAL DEVELOPMENT

In the context of the Slovene rural development the Ministry provides for the integrated development and the planning of rural areas, which include in addition to technological development, production raise and competitiveness of agricultural sector also the development of supplementary activities on farms and farm tourism.

The Ministry's field of activities includes also the protection of plants against harmful organisms, seed trade and protection of types of plants, protection against natural disasters, the cooperatives system, issues connected to social status of farmers and cooperation with professional institutions and non-governmental organizations in the field of agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

Slovenia has in the EU the lowest amount of cultivated areas per inhabitant; therefore, the agricultural land management is also important.

FORESTRY AND HUNTING

In the field of forestry the Ministry shall provide for sustainable management of forest ecosystems and their comprehensive inclusion in other areas of space and residence. This includes also hunting and management of wild animals. Special emphasis is given on qualitative timber and adding value to timber products.

FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY

In the light of confidence of consumers in food on Slovene market shelves the Ministry gives special attention to ensuring food safety and food quality. This includes the cultivation procedures on farms as well as the processing in agro-industry. Since the production of safe food begins already on arable land and in stables a special emphasis is given to veterinary inspections and production of qualitative and safe feedingstuffs. This is the only way of ensuring the production of agricultural and animal products, which are not harmful to health. The Ministry also provides for protection of food in the view of production and processing possibilities and requirements.

FISHERIES

The Ministry covers also the fisheries area. Although the fisheries sector is not extensive, Slovene fishermen are engaged with industrial fishing and aquaculture and processing of fishery products.

STATE AID

The Ministry is a competent body for transferring the content and reporting the data on state aid in the field of agriculture and fisheries and for assessment of conformity of state aid in agriculture and fisheries, which don’t have to be notified to the European Commission.
