Minister Židan and Cardinal Turkson on protection of natural resources and World Bee Day

Rome, 29 September 2016 – The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, Dejan Židan, and a delegation from Slovenia today met with Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, the President of the Pontifical Council of Justice and Peace. The responsibilities of this Pontifical Council include issues pertaining to natural resources, food and development.

Minister Židan presented to Cardinal Turkson Slovenia's initiative for the United Nations to proclaim 20 May as World Bee Day and today's full support of the FAO – COAG. Minister Židan and Cardinal Turkson opened a discussion about several important topics concerning food. They discussed in detail the importance of natural resources and the need to protect them, exchanging very similar points of view about this issue. They highlighted the importance of water and water resources for humanity and pointed out the dangers of privatising water resources.


Minister Židan offered Cardinal Turkson as a gift a small wooden replica of the Anton Janša bee house and presented the proposal of Slovenian beekeepers to build a real bee house in the gardens of the Vatican, as a symbolic show of support for beekeeping and Slovenia's initiative.
