Bhutan's Minister of Agriculture and Forests, Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji on a two-day visit to Slovenia

Ljubljana, 23 January 2017 – Minister of Agriculture and Forests of the Kingdom of Bhutan, Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji, is on his two-day working visit to Slovenia. In the morning, on the first day of his visit, he was received at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food by State Secretary Marjan Podgoršek. The distinguished guest and the State Secretary continued discussions on cooperation in sustainable forest management.

Then they visited the Slovenian Forestry Institute where, Bhutan's Minister was informed about the work of the Slovenian forestry sector and the state of the Slovenian forests. In the Rakitna area the guests were briefed on the situation in the field after the 2014 ice damage to forests and the forestry experts' approach to forest restoration following natural disasters.  Late in the afternoon the Bhutanese Minister visited the production facility of Riko prefabricated wooden houses as a model example of an excellently developed company in the wood industry. 

 

Cooperation between the Kingdom of Bhutan and the Republic of Slovenia was established in December 2015 during the EUFORINO project and was supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food of the Republic of Slovenia.  Last year, a visit from Bhutanese forestry experts was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia and the Slovenian Forestry Institute of Slovenia. This visit from Bhutan's Minister of Agriculture and Forests followed the invitation by Minister Dejan and is intended to deepen and extend cooperation between the two countries. In terms of cooperation so far, Slovenia has identified synergies in best practices on climate change and sustainable forest management, as well as cooperation in beekeeping. 

 

Tomorrow, on the second day of his visit, Minister Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji will visit the headquarters of the Apicultural Federation of Slovenia in Lukovica and have a working lunch with Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, Dejan Židan.
